Filmstrip for Photos on Facebook

To improve the ease-of-use for Facebook Photo Albums, I’ve sketched a filmstrip concept which will provide easier navigation (swiping the filmstrip allows users to traverse many photos in a single swipe) as well as improved context (you can see when you’re coming up on the end of the album)

Shown below is a sketched animation of what the interaction could look like when transitioning from the album preview into a specific photo.

Validation

In order to measure whether or not this is useful, it should be tested for usage. My theory is that a filmstrip which enables faster album traversal will result in higher engagement for photos inside of albums, as users will be able to quickly find photos worth engaging with.

Key metrics to look for:

  • Usage of filmstrip for navigation (vs swiping image)

  • Reduction in time spent on each photo

  • Improved engagement (reacts, comments, etc.) for photos inside of albums
